Time to pop a pill

Every month, we go through the same ritual. The first of the month is Heartgard day. In Florida we have a problem with heart worms all year round. Sidney and Shelby both love the Heartgard pill. The fourth of the month is flea medication day. It would be easier if I could use a topical, but Shelby is always licking Sidney and vice versa. Instead, we use Confortis. They HATE it. I have tried all kinds of toppings and nothing works. It is time to open mouths, pop in pill, close mouths, and blow in nose until they swallow. There must be an easier way. Shelby doesn’t always keep it down. Pictured- Shelby”I’m not eating that.” Sid staying in the X-pen and refusing to come out.

I LOVE Heartguard, but it is an expensive treat (but I’m not paying). No need for any flea or tick meds here, they don’t live in the desert. When we take a car trip (like last August to Montana), we get something applied to near our shoulders and we’re fine.

The shoulder thingie would be great if they didn’t lick each other all of the time. We love Heartgard.

Yep been through that pill time stuffs, man it was a war here, put it in and spit it out, over and over. But Bites has fell to the piece of American cheese folded over two or three times, what a sucker, goes down, never comes back! ME just hold it in your hand and down she goes!

We tried the cheese and the pill pockets, we are not fooled. We can unwrap cheese real fast and leave the pill pockets eaten by themselves. Thankfully this only occur once a month.

We are very lucky in that heartworm is not commonly found in South Africa and we don’t have ticks or fleas in the city that we live in. Sorry about the bitter pills 😦

The flea pills are supposed to be liver flavored. We do not know what liver tastes like as mom doesn’t eat meat. We do know that the taste is terrible.

When Mom got Corky 2 in 1992, she had heart worm disease. The treatment was terrible. She had to be very quiet for 6 weeks. You know how hard that is for a Scottie. It is easier to give the monthly pill and not have to worry. The cost was unbelievable too. Fleas are a part of life in Florida. If you can eliminate the problem, you have to do it.
